What is a Android Rom??
ANDROID Rom explained
Custom ROMs
A stock ROM is the version of the phone's operating system that comes with your phone when you buy it.
A custom ROM is a fully standalone version of the OS, including the kernel (which makes everything run), apps, services, etc - everything you need to operate the device, except it's customized by someone in some way.
So what does the "customized" part mean? Since Android is open source, developers are free to take stock ROMs, modify them, strip them of garbage, optimize them, add things, and pretty much do whatever their imagination and skills allow.
Why You Want Custom ROMs
Update Frequency
Using a custom ROM usually results in more frequent updates that fix bugs and introduce new features because the developer behind the ROM doesn't have the same procedures and red tape that the manufacturer+carrier combo does.
- A quality update can be churned faster because it doesn't involve the bureaucracy of 30 different project managers, 15 vice presidents, and 5 dozen marketing departments.
- A ROM developer usually gains a loyal community which beta tests his updates in real life situations and provide feedback, or even fixes bugs - that's the beauty of open source software.
- Oh and did I mention that ROMs are usually free and supported by optional donations? If you can't afford to pay for it, you don't have to.
- Finally, most custom ROMs out there are updateable over the air (OTA) and without reinstalling anything.
Who doesn't love open source after this?
Better Performance And Efficiency
Custom ROMs are oftentimes faster, more efficient, and use less memory because
- the developer ripped out useless garbage, such as carrier installed apps or
- the developer optimized the kernel. For example, an undervolted kernel can provide a much better battery life than the stock one.
Upgrading To A Better/Later Version Of Android
You can upgrade to a version of the OS that has not yet been released for your device, or never will be. This is possible in 2 situations:
- A leaked version of the new ROM showed up online, and the developer got on it like the fat kid chasing an ice cream truck. This was exactly the case with Hero and Android 2.1, allowing me to upgrade from 1.5 weeks (months) before the official version was available and ditch the bogged down and slow stock OS.
- A ROM from another phone was ported by the developer to work on yours. For example, G1 and MyTouch 3G users may never see Android 2.1 officially released on their phones, but Cyanogen, one of the most respected Android developers, was recently able to create a custom ROM running 2.1 for those devices. Oh, what a happy day it was for MT3G and G1 owners.
Ability To Install Apps To The SD Card
Most custom ROMs nowadays come with the ability to install applications to the SD card, calledApps2SD (or A2SD).
This is currently not possible on stock ROMs, even in Android 2.1 and is supposedly on Google's TODO list.
If you have run out of space on your phone (which I have repeatedly on my Hero), Apps2SD is a killer feature to have.
About That Rooting Business…
Don't confuse custom ROMs with rooting - they're completely different.
We have explained rooting and its benefits in an article called Rooting Explained + Top 5 Benefits Of Rooting Your Android Phone.
The Downsides Of Custom ROMs
Of course, there are dangers of using custom ROMs which you should be aware of.
Something Could Go Wrong
First of all, something may go wrong with the flashing process (that's the process of installing the ROM) and leave your phone in a bricked state. The chances of this are pretty low nowadays, and most of the time you can restore it back to normal.
Try to go for the ROM that has been tested by time and has lots of positive feedback.
Clean Wipe
In order to install a custom ROM, you need to perform a clean wipe.
This means you will lose all existing data, so you have to back everything up first. Of course, just for this, we have a straightforward tutorial that shows how to back up and restore your entire phone: [Complete Guide] How To Fully Back Up And Restore Your Android Phone Using Nandroid Backup.
Potential Problems
Custom ROMs could have bugs… but then so do the stock ones.
However, in case you do find a bug, you actually have a 2-way channel of reporting it - post in the ROM forum and you will more than likely get an answer back and your bug acknowledged.
Try doing this to your phone manufacturer and see if you can get past the first level of outsourced monkeys, let alone actual developers.
You May Void Your Warranty
It's possible that custom rooting will void your warranty because you will "break the seal" on the boot loader by installing a custom one which on some phones apparently can't be undone (this includes the Nexus One). Because of that, the manufacturer might be able to tell that the phone has had a custom ROM installed and not honor the warranty, in case you need to use it.
Now, in most cases, the benefits of the custom ROM outweigh the possibility of your warranty being denied. I recommend getting a warranty from your carrier and using that in case anything bad happens (that warranty is usually unconditional and covers things like losses and physical damage).
Getting The Right Custom ROM
New phones and ROMs come out all the time, and the scope of this article doesn't cover individual ROMs - but the general approach to finding one is Googling for "YOUR_PHONE_MODEL ROM" or something similar, optionally including the wanted Android version. Try it out - you'll find what you want.

What is Jailbreaking? & Benefits of it
What is Jailbreaking? Benefits, Risks & Legality of Jailbreaking

What is Jailbreaking?
Jailbreaking is basically the process of freeing your device (thus the term jailbreak) from the limitations that are imposed by Apple. While the iOS is one of the most stable and secure mobile operating systems around, it can become too restrictive due to Apple's "closed" mantra. Jailbreaking will allow the user to have read/write access to the iOS operating system which allows them to download and install additional apps, extensions and themes that are all unauthorized by Apple and not available officially in the App Store. And this brings us to the next important topic which is Cydia.
Cydia

Of course, you can't discuss about jailbreaking without mentioning Cydia. This is essentially the ultimate reason why you jailbreak your device. One can say that there is no point to jailbreaking your device if you don't even want to install Cydia. Jailbreaking your device will install Cydia into it which is a third-party digital distribution platform. To keep it simple, think of it as the "other" App Store or the "black market" version of the App Store because in a sense, all unauthorized apps and tweaks usually end up here. Much like the App Store, there are both free and paid apps (referred to as packages) available in Cydia.
What are the Benefits of Jailbreaking?
Unlock Your iPhone. Some folks buy their iPhones from another country and then bring it into their own. But since the phone is usually tied down to a carrier, one would need to unlock it first so it can be used for any carrier. If you jailbreak your device, you will be able to install a jailbreak app called Ultrasn0w and unlock your iPhone so you can use the carrier of your choice. Although there is another unlock method that requires you to purchase an interposer SIM and it doesn't require a jailbreak.
Full Customization. By jailbreaking your device, you will be able to fully customize your iOS device. iOS simply isn't known for its customizability. There is a jailbreak app called Winterboard that allows you to completely change the theme of iOS or for a more advanced solution, you can try Dreamboard. You can also customize the look of your lockscreen, Springboard, music player, slide to unlock bar, Notification Center and so on. With a jailbreak, you will be able to customize your device to a degree where you can really call it your own.
The Process is Quick, Easy and Reversible. As the years went by, jailbreak developers have working hard to provide the easiest jailbreak solutions. These days, it will only take a few clicks before you can jailbreak your device. The only tricky part is placing your device in DFU mode and even that is not that hard to perform. Even complete newbies can jailbreak their devices with ease. After jailbreaking, should you decide that it is not for you, you can always reverse the process by restoring your iDevice through iTunes.
Installous. Now this is a rather sensitive subject and is often a subject for intense debate. But I feel that this is rather an unavoidable issue and it should be safe to assume that some people might treat this as their sole reason for jailbreaking. With jailbreaking, it will allow you install an app called Installous which basically lets you download cracked apps for free. Not so sure if that $4.99 app from the App Store is worth your money or not? Well, you can sort of give it a free spin and see if you like the app or not.Disadvantages? Risks of Jailbreaking?
Bricking. The term suggests a software error that rendered the device completely unrecoverable without some hardware replacement. Now with regards to iOS devices, I feel that this is a rather loose term. In my experience, I haven't heard of a device that has been legitimately bricked. A device that was deemed to be bricked can be recovered through DFU mode and iTunes restore. If there is indeed a chance for bricking, the percentage is very, very low.
Warranty Void. Jailbreaking is a perfectly legal act but the folks over at Cupertino thinks otherwise. Any attempt to jailbreak an iDevice will void your warranty. So with that said, Apple has the right to deny you with any service repairs in case your device is damaged or malfunctions. So just a little tip: you might want to restore your device prior to taking it to Apple for repairs since they won't be able to detect it.
Updates Will Break Your Jailbreak. Apple and the jailbreaking community is on a continuous cat and mouse game. If a certain firmware version has been jailbroken, you can trust that the exploit will be plugged in the next update. If you update, you will surely lose your jailbreak and all your jailbreak tweaks and apps will stop working. As a rule of thumb for jailbreakers, do not ever update your firmware version unless there is an available jailbreak solution for it.The Legality of Jailbreaking

As of July 2010, the act of jailbreaking and unlocking iPhones has been ruled by the U.S. government to belegal. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation or EFF, "reverse engineering is a fair use when done for purposes of fostering interoperability with independently created software". So no, you won't get yourself in trouble with the law if you jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. But as stated earlier, Apple isn't exactly a fan of jailbreaking which explains why the company is so vocal with regards to opposing it. Apple may use technical countermeasures that will stop jailbreaking or prevent jailbroken devices from working but they will not be able to sue users over it. And as stated previously, your device warranty is void once it is found that has been jailbroken.

Installous Lets You Search For Apps On Cydia
Installous is an installation package for jailbroken iPhone, iPad and iPods that allows user to install unofficial Apple applications. What Installous does is preview Apple apps before they are purchased. It is a free tool that can be downloaded via Cydia. Installous allows users to search for apps on Cydia and other app databases and once you find an app that you like you can download it onto your iDevice. Installous also automatically extracts the downloaded file and places the contents in the appropriate directories on your iDevice. With Installous users can also remove apps, undo specific system changes and update their currently install apps with the latest software version. Installous works in a similar way to Windows Installer but has been designed specifically for Apple devices.
As of this writing, the latest version of this popular app is Installous 5. It includes a significant feature which is the download support for BitTorrent. It also added various features like iOS 5 notification support, better filehost compatibility, and the standard bug fixes and optimization. There is no version yet which is fully optimized for iOS 6 as of this moment, so at this point, all we can do is to wait for Installous 6 to be released. We are able to try Installous 5 for iOS 6 with some success but we have to admit that it has its fair share of errors and glitches, so keep that in mind when installing Installous on iOS 6.
